The days are getting longer and the snow has melted enough in the yard to reveal the Sweet Roast’s woodpile. I’ve also noticed a change in her lately, which has nothing to do with the pile of boards she was at one time contemplating moving from one location to another and back again as a form of exercise. What has happened is two things that seem to go together. The change in the weather – longer and slightly warmer days with some sunshine – has perked her up considerably. It’s a proven fact that many people suffer from a winter condition called SADD and stems from a lack of sunshine and shorter days. Sweet Roast may have a form of that, but we’re not sure. What we are sure of is the promise of spring has got her excited, which is a very good thing for her mental and physical health. If she’s looking forward to something she may get active and do something. Another part of the change I’ve noticed in her comes from her learning a new skill through an online computer course, which is adding more to her repertoire. What that is doing is forcing her to exercise a part of her brain that will ultimately improve her mental health. This means is that I have an example in my own home that verifies the connection I’ve always believed existed between mental and physical health. Most of us feel better once spring rolls around as we’re pretty much done with winter, the cold, the dark and dreary days so Sweet Roast is not an exception, but more likely just an example of what can happen with a change in seasons. It’s obviously starting to get her motivated.
