My first clue that something was happening occurred to me the other day when I tugged at my jeans. I noticed I had been pulling them up at the waist quite frequently and then it dawned on me – could I be losing weight from all the power-walking? Then I decided to confirm it by getting on the bathroom scale. As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t put a lot of faith in scales, but it did give me a reference point. I wasn’t convinced the scale was giving me the right message and chose to ignore it another couple of days. That worked fine but I could not ignore the constant pulling up of my jeans, which got me back on the scale. It was true. I had lost 15-pounds. It took me another couple days before I was brave enough to tell Sweet Roast. She was happy for me, but I could hear it in her voice. Then she said it. “Maybe you can help me with my weight.” I was honest in my response when I told her it was basically pretty simple, “You’ve just got to find something you like doing and stick with it.” And when you think about it, that’s really the bottom line. If you try to lose weight by doing some sort of exercise or routine you don’t like, you aren’t going to stick with it. Conversely, if you find something you like doing and stick with it you also need to see results to keep motivated. It may only be 15-pounds, but I’m motivated and power-walking from home to work and back once, and sometimes twice in a day is no big deal to me now. I’m contemplating suggesting we take one of our vehicles off the road for a while and see if we can manage. So far I’m not missing the car ride to work. The only problem is that there are work-related places I still need to go which are quite a bit further than a 10-minute power-walk away. This weekend will be a test for me as Sweet Roast has the car out of town and I have a few places I’m required to be outside of that 10-minute zone and her car just isn’t very reliable – but I know my feet are.
